Once frozen, the embryos are kept in sealed liquid nitrogen freezers. Embryos can be frozen in liquid nitrogen for several years. It is not known how long embryos can be frozen securely and still be valuable. Some countries have set time limits on how long embryos can be stored.

How safe is embryo cryopreservation?

Research has shown that freezing embryos does not harm the child. Children conceived from frozen embryos have no greater rate of birth defects or health problems as compared to the children born naturally.
